What Makes Design Work?
Tony Stavish, dubbed by House Beautiful Magazine as a rising star of interior design, once said: “The key to great design is capturing the spirit of the client and the essence of the space.”
But how do you know whether you’re making the right choice of wall and floor covering?
As any interior designer will tell you, colour plays a huge role in influencing the overall look, feel, ambience and atmosphere of a space. That’s why, above all, the psychology of colour is one of the biggest things to consider when you’re bringing your vision to life.
Colours can affect the way our minds work, often acting as stimulants, mild stimulants, and suppressants. Warm colours such as red, orange and yellow can increase mental activity, heart rate, and energy, while cooler colours including greens, blues and purples, can be associated with feelings of health, abundance, calmness and relaxation. (That’s often why hospitals will quite often use hues of green).
The other main consideration is the style and layout of your wall and floor covering. Are they square and symmetrical to represent a classic layout of a room? Or are they very deliberately jagged and angled to reflect or accentuate a modern space?
Add to that the finishes – from matt, glossy, and iridescent, or a combination of all three – plus the texture, whether flat, 3D or formatted to create an illusion, you can create something that really stands out for all the right reasons.
